Former Australian coach Justin Langer has weighed in on the ongoing debate about Steve Smith’s ideal batting position in Test cricket. Langer, who coached Australia from 2018 to 2022, strongly believes that Smith is best suited to bat at number four, rather than opening the innings.
Langer’s recommendation comes after Smith’s recent stint as an opener, following David Warner’s retirement. Despite a decent performance that included a solid 91 against the West Indies, Smith’s overall statistics as an opener have been underwhelming, averaging just 28.50. Langer argues that Smith, widely regarded as one of Australia’s greatest ever batsmen, is more effective at number four—a position where he has historically thrived, boasting an average over 60.
The former coach highlighted that while great players like Smith can adapt to different roles, his unique ability to dominate bowling attacks and stabilize the innings makes him a natural fit for the number four spot. This view is echoed by Smith’s current opening partner, Usman Khawaja, and cricket legend Matthew Hayden, who both prefer to see Smith return to the middle order.
Langer also touched on the strategic aspect behind Smith’s promotion, noting that it was driven by the desire to accommodate younger talent like Cameron Green. However, Langer insists that for the benefit of the team, Smith should return to his proven role at number four, particularly as Australia prepares for challenging series ahead, including the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India.
This discussion underscores the ongoing challenge for team selectors in balancing the integration of new talent with maximizing the contributions of established stars like Smith. With his remarkable record and impact at number four, it seems Langer’s advice is rooted in a deep understanding of what has made Smith so successful in the past.
