Bangladesh’s cricket team has pulled off a remarkable feat, securing their first-ever Test series win against Pakistan in a historic 2-0 sweep. The second Test in Rawalpindi, which wrapped up on September 3, 2024, was the scene of Bangladesh’s triumph, as they chased down a target of 185 with six wickets in hand, cementing their place in history.
The series win was particularly sweet as it came away from home, in Pakistan’s own backyard, where Bangladesh had never won a Test before. This victory is also Bangladesh’s first-ever Test series win against a major Test-playing nation, outside of their successes against Zimbabwe and the West Indies.
The second Test saw Bangladesh overcome a dramatic collapse early on. After being reduced to 26/6 on the third day, the experienced Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz stepped up to rescue their side. Litton smashed 138, while Mehidy contributed 78, helping Bangladesh post a competitive first-innings total of 262, just shy of Pakistan’s 274.
On the bowling front, Bangladesh’s young pacers Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana stole the spotlight. Hasan took a brilliant 5-for, while Nahid grabbed four wickets, bundling Pakistan out for a paltry 172 in their second innings. This set up a manageable target for the visitor.
Chasing 185, Bangladesh remained calm and composed. Despite early jitters with the loss of openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (38) and Mominul Haque (34) steadied the ship. In the end, the experienced duo of Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan carried Bangladesh to a famous win, with Shakib hitting the winning runs to seal the deal.
This victory signifies more than just a series win—it marks Bangladesh’s growing stature in Test cricket. With their bowlers stepping up and the batting order showing resilience, Bangladesh’s Test journey seems poised for new heights.
